Huesera: The Bone Woman
dir. Michelle Garza Cervera · 2023
Valeria Hernandez's life begins to constrict around her as she navigates the complexities of impending motherhood, her once-vibrant woodworking studio now suffocated by nursery decor. As she grapples with grotesque visions and the haunting presence of a former lover, the film immerses viewers in a chilling exploration of identity and the psychological toll of societal expectations.
Valeria Hernandez (Natalia Solián) finally achieves the future she has rehearsed for years, marriage, pregnancy, stability, yet every physical space around her starts shrinking the moment conception arrives. Her woodworking studio disappears beneath nursery decorations. Her family watches her with quiet suspicion. Raúl (Alfonso Dosal) treats reassurance like a management strategy. As sleepless nights blur into grotesque visions of twisted bodies and snapping joints, Valeria reconnects with Octavia (Mayra Batalla), the former lover who represents the life she amputated to become acceptable. The haunting intensifies alongside mounting panic, pushing Valeria toward occult intervention, emotional rupture, and a violent confrontation with the version of herself she buried alive.
