In Cairo, television reporter Charlie Cannon and his pregnant wife Larissa Cannon lose their young daughter Katie Cannon when she is kidnapped during a sudden sandstorm by a mysterious local woman. Eight years later, the broken family lives in Albuquerque with their teenage son Sebastian Cannon. Their world fractures again when Katie is discovered alive inside a sealed sarcophagus following an Egyptian plane crash. The family brings the catatonic, bandaged girl home to recover. However, Katie exhibits violent, unnatural behavior, shedding layers of skin inscribed with ancient incantations. As detective Dalia Zaki uncovers a multi-generational ritual back in Egypt, the malevolent force inside Katie rapidly spreads through the household.
