A person performs the codes of a world that is not theirs, and the performance is the plot. Barry Lyndon counterfeits the manners of an aristocracy that will never quite seat him; the Kim family arrives one forged credential at a time; a boy manages an audience at school; a child is read correctly by other children and wrongly by every adult. The rules in these films are unwritten and everyone else learned them young, so the tension is never whether the character is something — it is what the act costs to hold up, who can see through it, and what is left underneath when it slips.
