A rookie spends one shift being shown how policing actually works in Training Day, and by evening his training officer has made him complicit in most of it. Institutions that corrupt the people inside them are the standing subject, filmed in hard sunlight and handheld close-up. The later action films narrow to one competent man administering violence on behalf of somebody weaker, which The Equalizer does with a hardware store and a stopwatch.
