Three schoolgirls and a teacher walk up a rock on Valentine's Day 1900 in Picnic at Hanging Rock and do not come back. No explanation arrives. That withholding is the early Australian mode, and The Last Wave keeps it, putting a Sydney lawyer inside weather and a legal case he cannot read. The Hollywood films tighten the same idea into a premise: in The Truman Show a man discovers the town he lives in is a set and everyone he knows is paid.
