The hottest day of a Brooklyn summer runs its course in Do the Right Thing and ends with a bin through a pizzeria window and a man dead in the street. The film gives every side of the block its argument and refuses to arbitrate. Later work keeps the address and changes register: Bamboozled stages a modern minstrel show as satire, Inside Man runs a heist in Manhattan with race worked into the negotiation.
Signature
- A city block treated as a full political geography.
- Direct address and the double-dolly shot pulling a character out of the scene.
- Argument staged between characters the film will not rank.
- Genre used as a delivery mechanism for the same subject.
