Dancer in the Dark
dir. Lars von Trier · 2000
The struggle to create a better life for loved ones often leads to personal sacrifice and suffering.
Plot
Selma, a Czech immigrant on the verge of blindness, struggles to make ends meet for herself and her son, who has inherited the same genetic disorder and will suffer the same fate without an expensive operation. When life gets too difficult, Selma learns to cope through her love of musicals, dreaming up little numbers to the rhythmic beats of her surroundings.
Why watch
*Dancer in the Dark* is a harrowing exploration of sacrifice and resilience, where the vibrancy of musical dreams starkly contrasts with the grim realities of immigrant life. Lars von Trier's audacious vision invites viewers to feel the weight of Selma's plight while being swept away by the cathartic power of song.
