Lars von Trier

Provocation aimed at the audience through a suffering woman. Von Trier, a co-author of the Dogme 95 manifesto, builds each film around a female lead pushed to a sacrificial extreme — faith, blindness, a chalk-outline town, the end of the world — and shoots it in whatever stripped or stylised form the argument needs.
