Films about a person held together by an animal. For some people here the dog, cat or bird is the only thing going right, some are about to lose it, and some set off with it and go a long way.
The kestrel is the only thing going right for Billy Casper in Kes. He is bullied at school and ignored at home, and taming and training the bird gives his days a purpose. Losing the animal is the fear in Umberto D., where an elderly pensioner about to be put out of his boarding house fakes an illness to get into hospital, and leaves his small dog with the maid for safekeeping. The woman driving to Alaska for work in Wendy and Lucy does lose hers: her car breaks down, and her dog is taken to the pound after she is caught shoplifting food for it.
The long journeys go the other way. When his New York building is torn down for a parking garage in Harry and Tonto, Harry, a retired teacher in his seventies, sets off across the country with his cat to visit his children. Leonhard Seppala and his lead sled dog cross the Alaskan tundra together in the winter of 1925 in Togo. The animal is the one to worry about.
