A painter and stage designer who made films like diaries, Jarman put queer history on screen on his own terms. Edward II plays Marlowe's tragedy in modern dress, with a king who takes a male lover and hands his nobles their excuse. Wittgenstein stages the philosopher's life against a black backdrop. Blue is a single unchanging blue screen over voices, music and sound, a portrait of Jarman's experience of AIDS.
