new queer cinema

A wave of independent films beginning in the early 1990s that brought unapologetic, formally adventurous queer stories to the centre of art cinema. Named by critic B. Ruby Rich in 1992 after a cluster of debuts at Sundance and Toronto — Todd Haynes's Poison, Gregg Araki's The Living End, Tom Kalin's Swoon — that rejected the "noble victim" narrative of earlier gay cinema in favour of defiance, ambiguity, and genre play.

Distinguish from

Not all films with LGBTQ characters belong to the movement — mainstream productions like Film Noir or prestige biopics that happen to feature queer subjects sit outside NQC's independent, formally adventurous lineage. Overlaps with Mumblecore through shared directors (Sean Baker, Andrew Haigh) and low-budget naturalism, but NQC is defined by queer subject matter, not production method.
