Parks was a Life magazine photographer before he became the first Black director of a Hollywood studio feature, The Learning Tree, about a Black teenager in 1920s Kansas forced to grow up in less than a year. Shaft came next: a Harlem private detective up against the Black crime boss Bumpy and the mob. It helped start blaxploitation, and Shaft's Big Score! followed the next year.
