Kaneto Shindō

Shindō's films are made of work, hunger and bodies. The Naked Island follows a family of four, the only people on a tiny island, rowing to fetch water for their crops, and has almost no dialogue. In Onibaba, a woman and her daughter-in-law survive a civil war by killing stray samurai in the tall grass and selling their armour. Kuroneko sends the ghosts of two murdered women back to take revenge on samurai.
