At fourteen Pawlikowski left Poland, and after years of documentaries and English films he went back to shoot its postwar decades in black and white, in a nearly square frame. Ida sends a novice nun in 1962 to meet her only living relative before she takes her vows, and learns she is Jewish. Cold War follows two mismatched lovers across the borders of divided Europe. Fatherland puts Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika on a road trip through a ruined Germany in 1949.
