Two Americans who cannot sleep keep meeting in the bar of a Tokyo hotel neither has a reason to leave, and Lost in Translation lets them do very little about it. The films return to enclosure of that kind: a suburban house the Lisbon sisters cannot leave in The Virgin Suicides, a Chateau Marmont suite in Somewhere, Graceland in Priscilla. Someone is inside a comfortable room, being looked at, with time they cannot spend.
Signature
- Luxurious enclosure filmed as confinement.
- Young women observed from inside their own boredom.
- Pop needle-drops doing the emotional work dialogue declines.
- Endings that withhold the confirming line.
