the weight of silence

A newsroom in Spotlight spent decades not asking the question. A widow in Three Colors: Blue fills an apartment with blue light instead of speaking her grief. A teenager in The Perks of Being a Wallflower saw something terrible and decided, without deciding, to keep it inside. You wait the whole film for somebody to say it out loud.

Somebody chose not to speak, or a whole institution chose not to ask, and that choice keeps working on everyone standing near it. The unsaid thing sits in every frame: a dinner where nobody mentions the empty chair, a courtroom where the real crime is the one never reported.
