The Death of Mr. Lazarescu won Un Certain Regard at Cannes in 2005. A lonely man of sixty-three feels ill and calls an ambulance, and over one night the paramedic takes him from one Bucharest hospital to the next. Puiu's later films keep that shape, with real time, long takes and a camera that stays in the room while people argue, eat and wait. Sieranevada spends a whole family memorial gathering in one apartment.

Signature

  • Events shown at something close to their real duration.
  • Bureaucracy, medicine and family ritual as ordeals.
  • Long talk around a dinner table (Sieranevada, Malmkrog).
  • Puiu himself in the lead of Aurora.
