romanian new wave

14 titles · 2001–present · Romania

A generation of Romanian filmmakers who emerged after 2001 with austere, long-take dramas rooted in the textures of post-communist daily life. Puiu's The Death of Mr. Lazarescu (2005) and Mungiu's 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Palme d'Or, 2007) put the movement on the map with their unflinching, almost documentary observation of bureaucratic and moral crises that the characters navigate in real time.

Distinguish from

Shares the long-take observational style of Slow Cinema but is more narrative and socially specific — these films are always about Romania, its institutions, and the afterlife of communism. The neorealist inheritance from Italian Neorealism is visible in the nonprofessional casting and location shooting, but the Romanian films are more formally rigorous and less sentimental.
