A group of young Cahiers du Cinéma critics turned filmmakers who overthrew French studio cinema with hand-held cameras, location shooting, jump cuts, and a passionate relationship with both Hollywood genre film and Italian neorealism. Godard, Truffaut, Varda, Rivette, and Rohmer didn't share a style — they shared a conviction that cinema was a personal art and that inherited rules existed to be broken. Their formal innovations (discontinuity editing, direct address, improvised dialogue, self-reflexive storytelling) became the vocabulary of modern filmmaking worldwide.

Italian Neorealism provided a key inspiration but maintained transparency as a principle — the camera as invisible witness. The New Wave made the camera visible, celebrated its own artifice, and turned form itself into content. New Hollywood absorbed New Wave techniques into big-budget American filmmaking but traded the movement's intellectual essayism for visceral genre storytelling.
