A tendency in French cinema from the late 1990s onward defined by unflinching depictions of sex, violence, and bodily transgression, treated not as exploitation but as philosophical confrontation. Named by critic James Quandt in Artforum (2004), the label groups filmmakers who force the viewer into visceral proximity with the body — Noé's temporal violence in Irréversible, Breillat's clinical eroticism, Ducournau's corporeal horror in Raw and Titane.
Distinguish from
Overlaps with Giallo in its interest in stylised violence, but NFE is philosophically motivated rather than genre-driven — the shock serves an argument about embodiment, not a mystery plot. Shares boundary-pushing sensibility with Surrealist Cinema but is grounded in physical realism rather than dream logic.
