A retired teacher writes letters for illiterate customers at Rio's central station and mostly throws them away, until a boy whose mother has just died gives her no way to avoid him. Central Station then drives the two of them into the northeast to find his father. The journey is usually the structure: The Motorcycle Diaries follows two students down the length of South America and lets the continent do the political work. I'm Still Here stays in one Rio household after the dictatorship takes the father away.
