Hong Kong stopped being a genre factory around 1979, when a generation trained in television and abroad came home and rebuilt every local form at once, cutting action into a kinetic editing rhythm the old studios had never used. The local press reached for the French label and called them a New Wave, and the name stuck to a group that never wrote a manifesto or claimed to be one. Tsui Hark took that speed to the wuxia epic: Wong Fei-hung stands against foreign gunboats in Once Upon a Time in China. John Woo turned the same restlessness on the crime thriller, giving Hard Boiled a cop who loses his partner to gun smugglers and an undercover man who has been a gangster too long. Wong Kar-wai pointed it inward instead: his neighbours in In the Mood for Love find out their spouses are having an affair and never allow themselves the same. Ann Hui carried it into social realism, sending a Japanese photojournalist into postwar Vietnam to document a poor family the government called liberated, in Boat People. One city, four directors, and no two of these look remotely alike.

Distinguish from Wuxia is a genre tradition the Hong Kong New Wave often drew on (especially Tsui Hark), but the movement extends far beyond martial arts into crime, romance, comedy, and social drama. Taiwanese New Cinema emerged from a similar moment in Chinese-language cinema but pursued contemplative realism where Hong Kong favored genre energy.
