A generation of filmmakers — many trained in television or abroad — who transformed Hong Kong cinema from genre factory into one of the world's most kinetically inventive film cultures. The movement's range is enormous: Ann Hui's social dramas, Tsui Hark's reinvention of wuxia spectacle, John Woo's balletic gun operas, and Wong Kar-wai's impressionistic romances share a city and a moment but almost nothing else formally. What they share is ambition: each took a local genre tradition and pushed it into territory that demanded international attention.

Wuxia is a genre tradition the Hong Kong New Wave often drew on (especially Tsui Hark), but the movement extends far beyond martial arts into crime, romance, comedy, and social drama. Taiwanese New Cinema emerged from a similar moment in Chinese-language cinema but pursued contemplative realism where Hong Kong favored genre energy.
