French poetic realism of the late 1930s is largely the work of Marcel Carné and the poet Jacques Prévert: fog, night, port towns and lovers who meet too late. An army deserter arrives in Le Havre looking for a way out of the country in Port of Shadows. Daybreak opens on a factory worker barricaded in his room, remembering what led him there. Under the Occupation they made Children of Paradise, a three-hour love story set in the theatres of nineteenth-century Paris.
