greek weird wave

12 titles · 2009–present · Greece

A cycle of Greek films emerging during the country's financial crisis, united by absurdist premises, deadpan performances, and hermetic domestic spaces that double as allegories for a society under pressure. Named by Steve Rose in The Guardian (2011) after a cluster of festival successes — Lanthimos's Dogtooth, Tsangari's Attenberg, Avranas's Miss Violence — that shared a sensibility without sharing a manifesto.

Distinguish from

Shares the deadpan register and enclosed settings of Slow Cinema but is more aggressive and narratively driven. The absurdism overlaps with Surrealist Cinema but is rooted in social allegory — family and institution as microcosm — rather than dream logic or the unconscious.
